Key to Software Configuration Management are some key processes that are traditionally defined in SCM.
- Identification
- To be able to find the elements that can be replaced in a product, those elements need a name and a version--- or some other identifier. Getting a good understanding of what people mean when they say widget X, version 1 is critical to maintainablity.
- Consistency Checking
- Traditionally referred to as Control refers to keeping abreast of the changes and their impact for the end user.
- Status Accounting
- Recording and reporting on the status of components, change requests and statistics.
- Audit and Review
- Checking that the product is complete. Ensuring that the product is well defined as a set of components.
